Survival 101

Good morning chickadees, and HAPPY INDULGENCE FRIDAY🙂 I hope you’re all as excited for the weekend as I am!

I loved hearing about all of your gardening skills (or lack thereof;)), as well as all of your favorite foods!

Update: my sprouty sprouts have sprouted! The quinoa is absolutely delicious and fresh-tasting, and the beans are crunchy crunch. Success!

So, I’ve had a couple of crises over the last couple of days.

Allow me to explain.

Crisis #1:

Most of you probably heard my distress call on Twitter recently:

twitter

Uh yeah, at approx. 9 PM, my furnace decided to kick the bucket.

So, what do you do when your thermostat says 62 degrees Fahrenheit and the Isaac heating guy won’t be getting there until after midnight?

You make yourself a hugh jass pot of tea and put your redonkulously thick sleeping bag under your sheets and two blankets.

IMG_3600

That would be the BEST sleeping bag known to man. Go find it, it is made by Coleman and the inside is made of flannel:) Yeah, flannel.

This thing is so comfy and warm I had absolutely no problem NOT taking it back up to the attic once the furnace was fixed. It is like a cocoon. You do not mess with something that comfy.

Crisis #1: averted.

Crisis #2:

Mother Nature’s monthly gift was having me craving carbs and chocolate like a beeyotch.

So, what do I do?

Eat a million bananas and have a Hot Chocolate Cookie Dough Bowl for breakfast.

Duh.

IMG_3598

Whoever said chocolate was a dessert was seriously misinformed. Chocolate for breakfast is ALWAYS okay:)

I made the usual mix with a serving of sprouted quinoa instead of the oats, raw cacao instead of the Chocolate Amazing Grass, and added a teaspoon of freeze-dried acai powder.

Topped with bloobs, rasps, and tons of cacao nibs.

Chocolate craving: satisfied:)

Crisis #3:

We were all out of raisins. For a WHOLE TWO DAYS.

If you’re new to the bloggity blog, I have a raisin addiction. They are more of a staple in my diet than vegetables.

I literally eat redonk amounts of them every single day, typically at every meal and usually combined with hummus, quinoa, and balsamic (try that combo now, you can thank me later).

I don’t think I have ever been in such dire need of a certain ingredient in my entire life, I was freaking out and quite sure that the world was going to end on the day that I ran out of raisins (since having three giant containers of them in my pantry is never enough).

So, I tried to sub chopped prunes for the raisins in my usual quinoa-hummus-balsamic bowls.

It was awful.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME PEOPLE!

But it’s not like that stopped me from going to town on a container of prunes (not mixed with quinoa, hummus, or balsamic, no worries:)).

Lesson learned: nothing can ever replace raisins, do not be fooled by the dried-fruit nature of prunes and dates, they are posers.

Crisis #4:

Having the sniffles and being tired is no bueno.

So, what do I do?

Make a hugh jass green smoothie (tutorial coming soon!) and a salad beasty, add some delicious hummus-quinoa bowls, and call it a day.

IMG_3340

Sorry kiddos, ugly picture but at least it tasted good:) Besides, fugly food is always the yummiest, right?;)

Topped with hummus because it is the best salad dressing.

Spinach topped with artichoke hearts, red pepper, carrots, and hummus.

Oh, and that napsky I took might have helped a little too:)

Did I mention I love my vaporizer?

Steaaaaam:)

Lesson learned: a green smoothie and a salad beast a day keep the doctor away:)

—————————————————————————————————

That’s all for this morning lovlies! Indulge big tonight, and I’ll bring you a deliciously decadent recipe, so stay tuned!

Has your furnace ever broken? Did you layer a million blankets like I did?

Yes, please do NOT remind me, I was cuddling with my space heater basically.

What’s your favorite way to tame a chocolate craving?

Hot chocolate, chocolate mousse, anything topped with chocolate chips:)

How do you beat the Mother Nature’s Monthly Gift blues? Or if you’re a guy, how do you treat your girlfriend like a princess when she is acting like a poopy grumplekins?

CHOCOLATE, tea, sleep, and Hulu!

YIKES for ur furnace!!!!!!! and raisins, quinoa balsamic? odd combo, but i will totally take ur word for it! my fav way to tame the chocolate craving is a fudgie, no doubt!…. cant wait for a recipe- yours are always AMAAZINGG!

  2. I am SUCH a raisin addict too, so I can totally sympathise! Seriously!!

I’m loving chocolate chip cookie dough balls and YOUR amazing mousse at the moment!! Considering I had two dough balls with my brekkie today I think I got Indulgence Friday off to a good start! 😀

I did a post about how to survive feeling bleugh and PMSy on Wednesday!! My best cures were cookie baking (and eating!), chocolate, and watching Friends and Gilmore Girls reruns:)

CAN’T WAIT FOR YOUR NEXT RECIPE!! Still lovin’ the last one (read: making pretty much every day! :P)

  3. Oh no! I have the opposite problem. We have base wide power outages, and I DIE without ac. Africa is HOT!!!

  4. We had a big october storm and everything went down in the middle of winter-I broke out and went to my parents house (45 min away) haha..wayyyyyyy too cold!
Glad that you got out of all your crisis’!

  5. That really stinks about your furnace, I would also probably burrow under a million blankets and not move until it’s back on. And you are right, chocolate/sweetest for breakfast is so very right.

  6. I grew up in Florida so luckily I never had to worry about a furnace! But now that I’m in NY, I’m pretty sure I would curl up in a ball and freeze to death. Me + cold = not friends

  7. Ugh that stinks about your furnace!! Stay warm. I love having a handful of dark chocolate chips when a craving comes. Chocolate is so delicious, I couldn’t live without it!!

  8. The heating in my apartment doesn’t work very well (it’s a really old apartment, so the once the landlords turn on the heat for the winter months it comes out in a steady stream and it can’t be turned up or down!), so when it’s down in the zeros here…we have a major problem. My room gets down to around 45 to 50 degrees at night and I FREEZE! I just layer blankets on my bed (my mom even mailed me a huge fuzzy purple blanket that I looove because she felt so bad for me), wear layers to bed (it’s kind of a weird thing to do, dressing like you are going outside minus the jacket and boots), and drink insane amounts of hot tea when I am awake.

And to beat chocolate cravings I whip up some chocolate banana soft serve! Or grab a dark chocolate bar at the store and break off a couple of squares.

  9. Okay I go through raisins and grapes like it’s no ones business. Have you ever made your own raisins?!?! All yah gots to do is dehydrate some grapes. Check it out…http://www.fitfoodiefinds.com/2010/12/diy-dried-fruit.html

  10. chocolate craving? who, me?

yes. every day. 🙂 hot chocolate is an awesome fix, but so is my little guilty pleasure… don’t judge, but I absolutely LOVE brownie batter + a little water in a baby bowl + 5 seconds in the microwave.

seriously, don’t knock it ’till ya try it.

  11. It’s way too hot here in Miami for a furnace. And I love a vitatop for my choco cravings. Taste like a mini brownie!!

  12. When I went to visit my boyfriend in PA their furnace was broken in the middle of a snow storm. It was awful!!

Hahaha I love your line about fugly food – so true 🙂

  13. You had quite the night! My sister’s furnace died two days ago, and last night they were so cold they ended up sleeping over. Well, my sister headed to my parents house, and her husband and two kids came to ours. She’s a smart lady. Needless to say, we had quite the slumber party in our little house last night! 🙂

    I eat raisins like it’s my j.o.b.!!!

  14. I have a heated blanket, so sometimes I just use that (and turn my heat off entirely. Which sounds ridiculous, but for some reason, my apartment stays pretty well insulated, even when the temperature drops outside!)

I LOVE your solution to the chocolate crisis 😉 In fact… that might be my next breakfast. hehe

  15. I put raisins in everything!! Mother nature is a beast for me this week as well. I have been craving sweets like my life depends on me eating them 🙂

  16. you poor thing. thats happend to us 2x. IT WAS NOT FUN! Hope its all fixed soon. and I can totally relate to the raisins, except my downfall are FIGS!! hello fiber!

  17. Amber Shea @Almost Vegan

UGH, how crappy about the furnace! It’s happened to me once; I woke up at like 4am one night and it was <60 degrees in my place. Had to wake up an apt. maintenance dude, which made it worse!

That's so funny that you're addicted to raisins, of all things! Well, I should talk…in addition to nut butters and hummus, I have a pretty wild addiction to lentils… 😉

  18. Oh my gosh, I LOVE raisins as well!!! They are heavenly and I havent had them for awhile cause the hubbs hates them!
I love that you eat lots of chocolate for breakfast…me too!! But I def. dont look as good as you!! I need to make some of your yummy recipes!!
    Have a fabulous friday!! 🙂

  19. I haven’t has raisins in such a long time but I used to put them in everything, too. My bowls of oats or salad wasn’t complete without them!

And you have it right; chocolate most definitely is not just for dessert. It is preferable to have it with every meal, in fact. 🙂

  20. Oh no! I’m sorry about your furnace!

One of my favorite recipes to kick a chocolate crazing is my Almond Joy Pizzert Babies! 🙂

    Almond Joy Pizzert Babies!

Hehe, girl I love your blog! Every day when I receive the notice that you have a new post, I jump for joy!!!! 🙂

  21. FUGLY food is the best. I have more chocolaty things during mother natures present. I always have chocolate pancakes for breakfast and I feel 10x better.

  22. Ayla

Oh my gosh.. your posts are starting to rub off on me. I was making a salad today and in my head said “This spinach is starting to wilty-wilt.” Um.. haha.

If I were freezing I would definitely bundle up under a million blankets. Sure it would be nice to wander around without a million layers on but getting all cozy under blankets can be fun. 🙂

Chocolate is good at any time. I had it for dinner last night in the form of chocolate chocolate chip peanut butter oats. Yes, you read that right – chocolate chocolate chip.

  23. bean

hey katelyn, first i just wanted to say i love your blog and recipes! I’m curious though… i have tried the chocolate vega and i was just wondering is vanilla even better than the chocolate??!

  24. Well sounds like Mother Nature decided to grace us with gifts on the same day!!! haha I’ve been craving chocolate like it’s going out of style today!

Our furnace broke over Xmas break last year!!! It was horrible–but luckily my parents live right down the road, so I just had a little sleepover at their house! Crisis averted for us! 🙂

  25. I always go by the rule that chocolate is for breakfast! 😀 If I have anything at all that I can make into a chocolate breakfast, (which I always do,) I make one. 😉

  26. YOUR FURNACE BROKE….that is the worst, that happened to us last winter. Your breakfast looks amazing!! I am jealous. NO RAISINS…booo!!!! K, I am going to make your chocolate mouse and I am so so excited. Have a great Friday!

  27. oatsandspice

I don’t even know what I would do if our heat went out – I am one of those people who is ALWAYS cold. I would DIE if there wasn’t any heat! I hope everything is fixed now! And also I have never tried hummus on top of my salads – I am going to have to try it because I love hummus and I love salads 🙂

Oh and I am actually having a giveaway on my blog this week – if you have some time check it out: http://oatsandspice.wordpress.com/2011/02/11/peeling-it-fresh-giveaway/

  28. green smoothies seriously cure everything!

  29. My furnace didn’t BREAK but when i was home in december it was just not at its top functioning capacity I guess… I dunno, I just know that it was aroudn 65 and I was NOT happy.
So I sat on top of the heating vent… It sort of worked 😉

Yesterday I went to take a shower here at college and teh HOT WATER HEATER WAS BROKEN. it was a catastrophe. my solution was to let my hair be oily and look like a gross teenage boy for a day. better than freezing though… I don’t do cold 😉

  30. youre so right….nothing can sub for raisins. Dates in *some* raw unbaking desserts can be used but really, raisins are special 🙂

  31. You don’t need to fix your furnace – you just need to move down here to Australia where it’s summer 😉
